Raw Dog Food Tests Positive for Salmonella and Listeria
The FDA testing found Salmonella and Listeria in two lots of Darwin’s BioLogics All-Natural & Grain-Free Beef Recipe for Dogs.
Darwin’s Dog Food is Recalled Again
If you get Darwin’s pet food by subscription, please check your freezer. After a consumer complaint, the FDA sampled two lots and found Salmonella and Listeria. The FDA recommended a recall of both lots, but the producer has not recalled the items. Reportedly, Darwin’s producer told customers about Listeria in both lots. However, the FDA says it did not tell them that one lot also tested positive for Salmonella. The FDA also says it has not received sufficient documentation that the affected product is out of the market or out of customers’ freezers.
Darwin’s is a Repeat Offender
This is not the first time that this producer has refused to recall products that have tested positive for bacterial contamination. The FDA has announced recalls or “Do Not Feed” advisories for Darwin’s raw pet foods in 2018, 2019, 2024, and 2025 after finding E. coli, Salmonella, or Listeria. In multiple recent cases, the FDA said the company declined to recall the flagged lots. 👉 See the official FDA advisory HERE.

Why this matters for people and pets
Salmonella can make people and animals sick. Pets may carry and shed the bacteria without looking ill, which can spread contamination in your home. Listeria can also infect people and animals and can survive at refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
What to do now
Do not feed the products that match the lot numbers above. Do not donate them. Seal and discard in a secure trash container.
Clean and disinfect everything the food or your pet touched. Wash bowls, scoops, storage bins, prep surfaces, fridge or freezer shelves, floors, toys, and bedding with hot soapy water, then sanitize. Wash your hands well afterward. Here is a CDC Explainer.
Watch for symptoms.
People with Salmonella often have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Listeria symptoms can include fever and muscle aches, sometimes headache, stiff neck, confusion, or loss of balance. High-risk groups should contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop.
Pets may show vomiting, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, or low activity. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has symptoms. Pets can shed bacteria even if they look fine.
